Two golfers. One ambitious idea.
Lowestoft Driving Range began with conversations between two avid golfers who believed the town should have a dedicated practice facility of its own.
Following discussions with Rookery Park Golf Club, the idea developed into a serious proposal. Colin Hillier and Bob Edwards agreed to seek planning permission before committing to the field, knowing that the project could not proceed without consent for the building and its proposed lighting.
The first application encountered difficulties because of the floodlighting. Rather than abandon the idea, the plans were amended and resubmitted. Permission for the building was secured, further advice was taken from the council and an acceptable lighting design was eventually agreed.

Construction begins
After overcoming the planning hurdles, building work began. Colin and Bob completed as much of the work as possible themselves while both continuing with full-time jobs—an exhausting but rewarding period of long days at the site.December 2006

Continuous improvement
TrueStrike mats were introduced, together with a new seating area, artificial grass and a putting and chipping area. Coaching through the professionals at Rookery Park also became an important part of the range.31 January 2026
A new chapter under new ownership
On 31 January 2026, Lowestoft Driving Range entered a new phase under new ownership, with a commitment to respect its history while refreshing the facility and improving the experience for golfers of every level.Summer 2026
The range is refurbished
The bays received new dividers and mats, fresh paintwork and improved lighting. Fencing and netting were tidied, the site was thoroughly cleaned and the refurbished range reopened in July.Today
Welcoming every golfer
Thirteen bays—including a teaching bay—now serve experienced players, complete beginners and families, supported by free hire clubs, cash and card payment, refreshments and lessons through Rookery Park’s club professionals.Then and now

From stripping the bays back and carrying out repairs to fitting the new surfaces and completing the clean modern finish, the refurbishment brought the range into its next chapter.
